Custom Heat Treatment Tray Replacement from a Drawing or Worn Sample

Direct answer

A custom heat treatment tray can usually be reviewed from an approved drawing, a worn sample or a combination of both. The supplier should first confirm the tray’s overall dimensions, critical interfaces, support points, workpiece arrangement, load, furnace clearance and known damage. A drawing explains the intended geometry, while a worn sample shows how the tray actually behaved in service. Using both helps separate original design features from deformation, wear or accidental damage.

Drawing review

If a current drawing is available, identify the revision and mark the dimensions that control fit-up. Include rail or roller contact points, lifting features, locating details, openings, supports and any machined surfaces. Also confirm whether the drawing represents the tray currently installed or an earlier version.

Do not assume that every dimension on an old drawing remains correct. Compare key interfaces with the current furnace and, where practical, with the physical sample. Changes to the furnace, handling method or workpiece arrangement may require a controlled design review.

Worn-sample review

Keep the sample available until the required evidence has been recorded. Photograph the tray from several sides, including the installed orientation, support points, lifting areas and workpiece contact surfaces. Add a scale reference and mark cracks, bends, thinning, wear, sticking and contact marks.

Measure the overall dimensions and the dimensions that determine installation. Record distortion before straightening, cutting or cleaning. The damaged shape may reveal a load concentration, insufficient support, restricted clearance or repeated contact.

Information needed for the quotation

Provide:

  • tray drawing or worn sample;
  • length, width, height and critical interface dimensions;
  • workpiece type, arrangement and supported load;
  • furnace type, supports, rails, rollers and available clearance;
  • atmosphere and thermal-cycle information;
  • handling and lifting method;
  • photos and description of deformation, cracks or wear;
  • machining, inspection and delivery requirements.

If an item is unknown, label it as unknown rather than estimating it. Clear uncertainty helps the engineering review focus on the information that matters most.

Copy, improve or redesign?

When the furnace, load and handling method are unchanged, reproducing the approved geometry may be appropriate. If the tray failed or the application changed, the supplier should review whether a support, transition, opening, locating feature or clearance needs adjustment. A replacement should not automatically copy a damaged shape without reviewing the failure evidence.

Frequently asked questions

Is a worn sample enough for a quotation?

It can be enough to start a review, but a drawing, measurements, photographs and furnace information make the quotation more reliable.

Should I send the sample before taking photographs?

Record its installed orientation, damage and critical dimensions first. Do not straighten or cut it before the failure evidence is documented.

Can ECOOSUN reproduce a tray from a sample?

ECOOSUN can review a sample-based custom casting request. The final route and quotation depend on the confirmed geometry, application information and inspection requirements.
