Direct answer
A heat treatment fixture supports and positions a workpiece through a furnace cycle. For distortion control, review the workpiece geometry, locating points, support strategy, load path, furnace clearance, handling method and thermal movement together. The fixture should locate the part repeatably without creating unnecessary restraint or contact. A useful review starts with the workpiece drawing and failure history, then checks how the fixture is loaded, heated, moved, cooled and unloaded.
Start with the workpiece
Provide the workpiece drawing or a clear sample description. Mark datum features, functional surfaces, thin sections, flexible areas, holes, bosses and surfaces that must remain accessible. Explain which dimensions or positions matter after the heat-treatment cycle.
The fixture cannot be reviewed independently from the workpiece. A locating point that looks simple on the fixture drawing may create a concentrated contact force or block movement when the workpiece expands.
Locating and support points
Map the primary locating points, secondary supports, restraints and lifting features. Explain which points locate the part and which only prevent tipping or movement. Check whether the workpiece is supported across its actual load path and whether the fixture is stable during handling.
Record contact marks, sticking, wear and any difference between the intended and actual loading method. If operators changed the arrangement, include that change in the review.
Clearance and thermal movement
Measure the installed clearance between the fixture, workpiece and furnace components. Consider rails, rollers, posts, heating elements, burner areas, doors and transfer equipment. The required clearance should be checked in the working position, not only on a room-temperature drawing.
Provide confirmed atmosphere and thermal-cycle information. The engineering review should identify where movement is expected and where restraint could cause interference, distortion or cracking. Avoid converting incomplete operating data into a general temperature or life promise.
Handling and repeatability
Describe how the fixture is loaded, lifted, transferred, unloaded and stored. Include lifting points, orientation marks, operator access and any dedicated handling tools. A fixture that is accurate during loading but difficult to handle may lead to inconsistent placement and repeated contact damage.
Use clear reference features and a repeatable loading sequence. If the same workpiece can be loaded in more than one orientation, the design should make the intended orientation easy to identify.

Frequently asked questions
Does a fixture eliminate all workpiece distortion?
No. A fixture can improve repeatable positioning and support, but results depend on the workpiece, process, equipment, loading and operating conditions.
Should the fixture hold the workpiece rigidly?
Not automatically. The locating and restraint strategy should match the workpiece geometry and expected movement. Excessive restraint can create a different failure mode.
What should I send for a fixture design review?
Send the workpiece drawing or sample, fixture drawing if available, load, furnace interface, thermal-cycle information, handling method and any distortion or contact history.

Production context: The component reference should be read together with the manufacturing and inspection context behind the furnace application.
