How to Replace a Heat Treatment Basket from a Worn Sample

Direct answer: A worn heat treatment basket can be used as a starting reference, but it should not be copied without checking the original dimensions, furnace clearance, load path and failure history. Send the worn sample or drawing together with measurements, furnace information, workpiece arrangement and photographs of deformation or cracking. ECOOSUN can use these inputs to review replacement fit, casting requirements and inspection needs before preparing a quotation.

Step 1: Preserve the evidence before removing the basket

Photograph the basket in its installed position when safe. Take close-up photographs of cracks, worn contact areas, distorted corners, lifting points and locations where it touched the furnace or conveyor. Record which side faced the furnace and how the workpieces were arranged. Do not clean, straighten or cut the sample before its condition has been recorded.

Step 2: Record the replacement dimensions

Measure overall length, width and height. Also record frame thickness, lifting points, support locations, openings, locating features and critical clearances. Mark dimensions that affect installation or handling. If the basket has distorted, record both the current measurement and, where known, the original drawing dimension.

Step 3: Describe the furnace and load path

Provide the furnace type, internal clearance, loading method, lifting method, support arrangement, workpiece type, batch arrangement and available load information. Also record the operating atmosphere and thermal-cycle information that the equipment team can share.

Step 4: Describe the failure history

State when the problem appeared and whether it developed gradually or suddenly. Useful descriptions include permanent deformation, cracking near a corner or support, wear at contact areas, sticking during loading, oxidation and loss of clearance. Avoid assigning a cause before measurements and operating information have been reviewed.

Step 5: Review more than shape

The replacement should be checked against the furnace interface, workpiece arrangement, load path and thermal cycle. A different support feature, lifting point or frame geometry may be needed if the process or equipment has changed. See the Heat Treatment Baskets page for basic RFQ inputs. If the basket also locates individual parts, review Heat Treatment Fixtures.

What to include in the RFQ package

  1. The worn basket or a drawing/CAD file.
  2. An overall dimension sketch and critical interface dimensions.
  3. Photographs before and after removal.
  4. Furnace type, internal clearance and handling method.
  5. Workpiece arrangement, load information and quantity.
  6. Operating atmosphere and thermal-cycle information.
  7. Failure history and previous inspection notes.
  8. Required quantity, delivery location and packaging requirements.

Frequently asked questions

Can a supplier quote without receiving the physical basket?

Yes, a clear drawing or complete dimensioned photo package may be enough for an initial review. A physical sample is useful when hidden features, distortion or wear are difficult to measure.

Should a deformed basket be straightened before sending it?

Do not alter the sample before photographing and measuring it. The deformation may help the engineering team understand what happened during service.

Can the replacement be improved instead of copied?

Potentially, but any change should be based on the furnace interface, load path, failure evidence and buyer approval.
