Why Do Heat Treatment Baskets Deform or Crack?

Direct answer

Heat treatment baskets may deform or crack because of a combination of load path, support, clearance, workpiece arrangement, thermal cycling, contact, wear and manufacturing or inspection issues. The correct response is to record where and when the damage occurred, measure the installed basket, review the furnace and operating conditions, and then decide whether the replacement should reproduce or improve the design. Copying a damaged shape without analysis can reproduce the failure.

Start with the damage pattern

Photograph the basket in the installed position when safe. Mark cracks, permanent bends, worn contact areas, distorted corners, lifting-point damage and any location that touched the furnace or conveyor. Record which side faced the furnace and how the workpieces were loaded.

The location matters. Damage near a support, lifting point, corner, joint or concentrated contact area may point to a different review question than uniform distortion across the basket.

Check the load path and handling method

Record the workpiece arrangement, batch load, contact points, lifting method, support arrangement and transfer steps. A basket can experience different forces during loading, furnace movement, lifting and unloading. If the handling system or workpiece arrangement changed, record that change.

Check clearance and thermal movement

Record furnace type, internal clearance, support points, atmosphere and thermal-cycle information that can be shared. Contact with the furnace or adjacent components can create local damage, while restricted clearance can turn normal thermal movement into interference.

Do not convert an unknown process condition into an assumed temperature or life claim. The goal is to identify the confirmed inputs needed for the engineering review.

Decide whether to copy or redesign

A replacement may need to reproduce the existing geometry when the installation and process are unchanged. A controlled design change may be more appropriate when the furnace, load, support or workpiece arrangement has changed. Any change should be based on measurements, photographs, operating information and buyer approval.

What to send for failure review

Send the basket or drawing, dimensioned photographs, furnace layout information, load and workpiece arrangement, failure timing, maintenance history, operating atmosphere, thermal-cycle information and any previous inspection records. Contact ECOOSUN to discuss the available evidence.

Frequently asked questions

Does a crack always mean the material is wrong?

Not necessarily. Cracking can involve geometry, support, load, contact, thermal cycling, manufacturing or inspection factors. The damage pattern and operating information should be reviewed together.

Should I straighten the basket before sending it?

Photograph and measure it before altering it. The deformation may help explain the failure.

Can the replacement be stronger without changing the design?

That depends on the actual failure mechanism and application. A supplier should review the geometry, load path and operating information before proposing a change.
